Recycling Basics
Do not put plastic BAGS in recycling. They go to the Giant or Safeway.
Do not mix paper items and plastic/metal. Someone at the recycling center will have to manually separate them.
Most plastic items can go into your recycling bin—but not those numbered 1 or 6 (typically deli containers & others that are noisy when you try to crumple them.
It’s better to put bottle caps in the trash.
Pizza boxes can go into recycling—if there is very little or no pizza residue. If there is residue, the best thing to do is rip off that part & put it in the trash. Then the rest of the box can be recycled.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) contain mercury, so it’s not good to put them in your trash. You can drop them at these places: Home Depot, IKEA, Zimmerman's Home Center (Burtonsville), Amicus Green Building Center (Kensington), My Organic Market (Rockville), & the Montgomery County Solid Waste Transfer Station (Derwood). Bethesda Green is trying to create a drop-off spot in Bethesda.
